The Indian state of Maharashtra (home to Mumbai and over 110M people)has begun using XBRL to generate its annual publication of crime statistics.

Starting next year,the Criminal Investigation Department’s book ‘Crime in Maharashtra’will be produced using tagged data.The envisioned benefits include the inclusion of meta data when sharing information with other jurisdictions and the use of validation rules to keep abreast of policy changes by the Indian National Crimes Rerds Bureau.This is a unique application of structured data outside the business arena and it will be interesting to see if it gains traction and can be applied on a wider scale in the future.Read news verage of the program.
