ALTOVA MISSIONKIT TOOLS – XMLSPY, MAPFORCE, AND STYLEVISION – DELIVER POWERFUL FUNCTIONALITY FOR VIEWING, EDITING, VALIDATING, MAPPING, AND PUBLISHING XBRL DATA

Altova® (),creator of XMLSpy®, the industry leading XML editor, today announced the Maryland Association of CPAs (MACPA) is using the Altova MissionKit® tool suite to transform its internal accounting data into the Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) format. MACPA looked to Altova to raise its working awareness of the XBRL standard and leverage its financial data in XBRL format to gain efficiencies and improve transparency. They chose the Altova MissionKit software suite, which includes multiple tools for working with XBRL. Specifically, MACPA was able to use XMLSpy, MapForce®, and StyleVision® to customize, map, and publish their XBRL data into content that could be shared among its organization’s members and other non-profits by utilizing the tools’ intelligent wizards, graphical drag-and-drop design models, and various code generation capabilities.

“The Maryland Association of CPAs is just one example of how an organization can utilize our MissionKit tool suite to view and extend standard XBRL taxonomies, transform data from backend systems into XBRL, and then render that XBRL data into various formats for communication with other interested parties – all in house. The XBRL support available in the MissionKit gives companies of all sizes a cost-effective toolset to help automate the way their financial data is captured, shared, reported, and analyzed,” said Alexander Falk, President and CEO for Altova.

“MACPA was looking to increase our working knowledge of XBRL in order to gain more efficiency and improve the transparency of our financial data. Ultimately we also hoped to find a solution that we could showcase XBRL and its benefits to the organization and other non-profits.” said Tom Hood, CEO and Executive Director for the MACPA. “The Altova MissionKit gave us the tools we needed to turn our accounting data into XBRL format and automate the previously burdensome data collection and transformation tasks, which allowed us to gain more insight into our financial data.”

XBRL support is available in the following Altova MissionKit tools and is detailed below:

XMLSpy 2011

Altova XMLSpy provides support for XBRL validation and taxonomy editing. An engine in XMLSpy supports the validation of documents created based on XBRL 2.1 and XBRL Dimensions 1.0, and a powerful, graphical XBRL taxonomy editor provides a visual representation of the XBRL taxonomies and allows users to explore their structure and extend industry standard taxonomies. XMLSpy 2011 is also the first and only XML editor on the market that delivers support for chart creation, including pie, line, bar, and gauge charts. Users can now visualize and analyze numerical XML and XBRL data directly inside XMLSpy – no more exporting to Excel or other tools. XBRL validation is also supported in AltovaXML®, a free XML standards processor.

MACPA utilized this key functionality within XMLSpy to extend the US-GAAP taxonomy to accommodate specific entries for the non-profit industry. The US-GAAP taxonomy is a set of standards governing the reporting of transactions and preparation of financial statements. Using XMLSpy the MACPA was able to select both a base taxonomy (i.e., US-GAAP) and entry point taxonomy (i.e., Commercial and Industrial, Banking and Savings) allowing them to extend and add several non-profit reporting standards to the existing schema.

MapForce 2011

MapForce supports drag-and-drop mapping of XBRL taxonomies as a source or target in any data mapping project. Users can map XBRL data to or from any other data format supported by MapForce, including XML, databases, flat files, Excel (OOXML), Web services, and EDI. MapForce transformations can be run on a one-time basis or automated through royalty-free code generation in Java, C#, C++, or via the command line. MapForce also provides unique functionality for rendering reports to analyze the results of data mapping projects. Through integration with Altova StyleVision, MapForce users can generate dynamic, automated reports based on the results of their XML and XBRL mappings.

MACPA used Altova’s data mapping tool to map their financial data from the Microsoft Dynamics accounting system to the XBRL Global Ledger (GL) taxonomy and then to the newly extended US-GAAP taxonomy. The XBRL GL taxonomy provides a way to translate transaction data from the general ledger, payables, receivables, inventory balances, and other assets/non-financial data. Using MapForce MACPA was able to transform their data instantly and generate an XBRL instance document, as well as outputting the data in Excel to populate their financial Key Performance Indicator (KPI) system, significantly reducing the amount of time and effort required to prepare the KPI documentation.

StyleVision 2011

Altova’s graphical stylesheet design tool includes native support for XBRL and XBRL Dimensions formatting requirements. Users can visually design financial reports for simultaneous output into HTML, RTF, PDF, and Word (OOXML) formats based on XBRL taxonomy requirements. An XBRL Table Wizard allows users to easily customize a table structure and specify concepts to be included in reports. Users can also select the US-GAAP mode to have StyleVision automatically format the data according to the SEC requirements. Adding to its XBRL rendering capabilities, StyleVision 2011 can now generate charts from within XBRL reports using a comprehensive XBRL Chart Wizard. Users can customize chart data by manually selecting category or series values. The addition of charting to StyleVision's already powerful general purpose reporting capabilities makes for an advanced and highly scalable decision support tool for XML, database, and XBRL content.

The XBRL files generated from MapForce will soon be used by the MACPA as a foundation for a number of reporting functions including, to publish the association's audited financial statements on their Web site using HTML. This will eliminate the costly reconciliation process and reduce the risk of errors while increasing transparency and the timeliness of the data. Additionally, the organization has plans to automate the previously burdensome tax filing tasks by mapping the association's financial data to the 990 tax return to further providing even greater efficiencies..
