Free software is a time-honored marketing tool, and the GRC industry has seen several examples recently. A few years ago, Configuresoft offered what it called the industry's "first-ever free downloadable utility." Dynasec launched what it called a free Personal Edition of its Sarbox software.
In the same spirit, cloud-based corporate performance management firm Host Analytics and Extensible Business Reporting Language software developer NeoClarus have released a free product to help first-time corporate XBRL filers comply with the SEC mandate. The new product identifies and recommends tags for mapping a company's financial statements.
"From there, companies can review their statements in the context of the current XBRL taxonomy to understand the statements that need tagging and map them accordingly. The product ultimately allows users to identify items in their financial statements that they want to represent differently to better conform to the XBRL tags, rather than filing extensions," notes Accounting Today.
The idea is to get the user hooked or at least intrigued, which just might give the companies a shot at landing an actual paying deal. With the XBRL imperatives heating up, the companies may find more takers.
