The AICPA has released The Story of Our New Language, a paper documenting the history of XBRL from its origination by Charlie Hoffman, CPA, in 1998 to its adoption for public company reporting in the U.S. a decade later. XBRL's success has been bolstered by the AICPA's and the accounting profession's support and leadership since inception. Their key decisions to make XBRL intellectual property available in the public domain and to give XBRL its own organizational standing outside of the AICPA enabled non-CPA groups to contribute to and influence XBRL's development and adoption. Read the XBRL story, told from the perspectives of many of the influencers and contributors over its 10-year journey. For additional information on XBRL, visit the AICPA Web site.
